Program Information/Mission

The mission of the Medical Office Administrative Assistant Certificate program is to provide the curriculum and experiences to enable graduates to attain knowledge, attitudes, and skills to perform as an entry-level medical office administrative assistant.

Admission to Program

Admission requirement: 

  • Current high school senior or high school graduate with minimum high school GPA 2.7, or 6 credit hours of college-level courses with minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher OR College/ ICC student with minimum overall college GPA 2.0 OR 6 hours of required courses from program sequence with C or higher

  • Requires the Health Science Application


    Additional requirements after program acceptance:

  • Complete drug screen, criminal background check, physical examination and immunizations 

  • Complete Healthcare Provider CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross (ARC) BLS attained and keep it current throughout program 

  • Participate in scheduled program registration and orientation sessions

  • Complete Keyboarding, 40 words per minute (wpm), and accuracy of 92% requirement. Go to  www.typing.com, complete free 1:00 minute online typing test to evaluate keyboarding skill level.  If score below 40 wpm or below 92% accuracy, complete free typing lessons and retake typing test to earn the minimal competency 40 wpm and accuracy of 92%

  • Maintain minimum GPA 2.0 and earn GPA 2.0 or higher in all courses required within program

Recommendations:

  • High school courses: keyboarding

  • Prior to application, schedule an appointment with college health careers student success advisor for assistance with enrolling in required courses

  • Required general education courses from program sequence may be completed with grade C or higher, prior to acceptance/admission into program

Additional Program Information

Medical Office Administrative Assistants are specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative duties. The administrative program develops such necessary skills as arranging patient appointments, communicating with the public in person and by telephone, basic bookkeeping, ordering equipment and supplies, and completing medical forms. This program is a 9 month certificate, non-accredited program.

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

Student must attain a grade of C or better in all required program courses to remain in and graduate from the program.
